FAQQ) Where in the Comox Valley is it best to paddle board?
A) The valley has excellent options such as Comox Lake, Kye Bay and one of my favorite spots being The Goose Spit due to the sheltered bay and always the opportunity to see wildlife. Q) What equipment do you need? Q) Where in the Comox Valley is it best to paddle board? A) By law you must have an approved PDF with a whistle, a SUP paddle, a board and one of the most important safety devices being your leash. Q) Where can you get lessons in the Valley? A) Lessons are provided at Compass Adventure in Comox, Comox Valley Kayaks in Courtenay and West Coast water Sports at Comox Lake. Q) How do you know what type of paddle board is best for your ability? A) Boardshape is more a matter of how you want to paddleboard. There are two main designs being displacement, meaning it has a sharp pointy edge similar to a canoe that cuts through the water. Fast and straight on flat water. Nect is the planing hull that rides on the wave using a flater nose like a surfboard. Great for waves and rougher choppier conditions. for size, typically the wider and longer will provide better stability. (min 10ft for smaller adult female to 14ft for average adult male) widths from 27 to 32 inches wide. Q) What are the different types of paddles? A) Paddles typically are in one of two designs, fixed shaft and adjustable. Fixed is for a person who paddles in one typical way at a known paddle length. An adjustable paddle is used for families with multiple height users or for travelling to safe space. Q) Inflatable versus Epoxy A) Epoxy boards are great for people with large vehicles and storage. They are more preferred by ocean going paddlers for rigidity and a solid base. Inflatables are great for people with smaller vehicles, condos, want to paddle in places that may have hazards that may damage a hard board but just bounces off an inflatable. This is ideal for rivers or very rocky shorelines or long portages as inflatables can pack into a backpack and are airline approved for air travel. One other type not mentioned and more suited for racing but carbon in getting very popular but comes at a greatly increased cost and fragility. |
